Stearns logoHave you ever wondered how to identify the age of a bone, or the gender of a skull? As part of the Stearns History Museum’s new Affiliation with the Smithsonian Institution, we are offering weekly web-based programs.

Beginning Saturday, April 12, at 1:00 p.m. educational and entertaining web streaming videos created by the Smithsonian will be shown at the museum. The videos are approximately 30 minutes in length and are from the Smithsonian Science How? series.

Smithsonian Saturdays will be held at 1:00 pm at the Museum and the topics for the following are:

April 12: Paleobiology: Unearthing Fossil Whales
April 19: Forensic Ornithology: Bird Detective
April 26: Forensic Anthropology: Bone Whispering
May 3: Anthropod Adaptations: Inside the Insect Zoo
May10: Human Evolution: Early Human Diets
May 24: Quantifying Biodiversity: Life in One Cubic Foot
May 31: Deep Reef Biodiversity: Exploring the Unexplored

“There are nineteen different Smithsonian Institution museums from which we can get programming,” Stearns History Museum Executive Director Tim Hoheisel said. “We decided to stream programs about areas which we do not cover in our museum. People told us that they like science so that is where we are starting.” Future programs will be about different topics.

The mission of Smithsonian Affiliations is to share resources with Americans in their own communities by developing collaborative partnerships with museums, cultural and educational organizations. Together, we bring the Smithsonian, in all of its breadth and scope, to local communities and create lasting experiences that broaden perspectives on science, history, world cultures, and the arts.

The cost of Smithsonian Saturdays is $7 per adult, $3 per child and free for SHM members. Fee also includes admission into the Exhibit Gallery, Children’s Room, and Research Center.
